Rhyming Activities to use at Home or School



Rhyming is an integral part of phonemic awareness, and is a necessary skill for reading well. FISH WISH

Read the following sentences to student(s). Ask which words rhyme (sound the same at the end). After you discuss answers, have students repeat the sentence, emphasizing the words that rhyme. You could have kids clap on these words as well.

I wish for a fish that will go splish, splish, splish.

The cat sat by the fat rat on the mat.

I have a red bed made of lead.

My cousin Rick had a quick lick off my ice cream stick.

It is cool to obey the rule in school.

I try to eat my shoofly pie.

I bought a new left blue shoe for two dollars.

Don’t fall off the wall.


Odd One Out

Directions: A student is given 3 words, of which they must determine which one does not rhyme with the other two. If the correct answer is given, the student receives a token. All students are given the same amount of turns. At the end of the game, count tokens to determine winner.
