Phonemic Awareness Activities to Identify Words in Sentences
This is one fun activity to practice identifying words in sentences that children love because it gets them moving! Have students line up across room. Read a sentence from the list below and have students repeat sentence slowly, taking a step for each word. Model for students how to do this by doing it yourself the first time. Next, have several students do this individually and then in small groups.
If students are having trouble, have them do the same sentence over after you (or another student) has shown them how to do it correctly.
If you don't want students to move around, you can do this same activity, but with students clapping, stomping, or snapping for each word in the sentence.
This is another game idea to try, especially in a small group - All you need is a gameboard of any kind and a game piece for each student. The teacher/parent reads a sentence and the child moves one place for every word in the sentence. It is best to have the student say the sentence aloud while moving. Whichever student makes it to the end of the gameboard first wins!
